Round 14: Taconic GC, Tucked in the Berkshires, is Charming, Challenging, and a Treat.
Spending the weekend in Williamstown means a tee time at Taconic. What an absolute treat.
This is round 14 in my quest to play every course in the state.
As soon as I walked off the course I wanted to play it again. We’re staying here for two more days and the siren song is extremely strong. The course is beautiful, tucked in the Berkshires with incredibly designed holes that will challenge golfers of any level. And how about those flags! Never seen anything like them before!
I picked the back tees, and they were a test. The front 9 is probably the easier of the sides. The par 4 fourth is a short dynamo with a sloped green that is tough to hit if you don’t pick the right club. The par 4 seventh is a beast up a hill to a green that might not accept an approach form Jennifer Lawrence.
The par 4s on the back nine probably stack up to any in the state. Golly. There’s only one shorter than 403. The wind whips through the valley, typically hurting or across most holes. Making every shot difficult. The 12th tee shot over a escarpment is daunting and makes the 377 yard par 4 hold up to the rest on the back.
The closing stretch is bananas: par 4s measuring 441 and 460 uphill. A 245 yard par 3 17th and a 545 yard par 5.
This place is spectacular and even as guests Tiffany and I sat on the patio and had lunch without a bother. The pro was super helpful and the round took three hours walking. This is a place I could spend every day.
