Round 2: A firm and fast day at Shaker Hills
Shaker Hills is tucked out in Harvard, Massachusetts. About a 45 minute ride from Boston.
I’ve played here many times growing up, and really enjoy the course. It was a scorcher on Saturday when we teed it up. And the walk was challenging due to the hills on the course.
It’s rare to find a flat shot on this golf course. It always feels like you’re adding or subtracting yardage on tee shots and approaches into the greens. Toss in the fact that the course was firm and fast, due to the lack of rain, we all had some shots get away from us once it hit the ground.
Some highlight holes for me are the par 3 third, a tough downhiller with water left. Then the par 5 fifth hole is a true butt-kicker. A long, winding 600 yarder from the tips (we played one tee up). The hole is simply a monster.
On the back nine, the 13th, a downhill par three, is a fun one. It plays way downhill, and offers a nice view of the surrounding area. The closing 18th is a fabulous closer. A gettable rolling par 5 that brings you right back to the clubhouse. A very cool feature is a camera that shows each group finishing on a 10 minute delay, so you can have a beer at the bar and watch your group finish.
