Round 29: Sandy Burr is a Small Donald Ross Gem in Wayland
Had a great morning at Sandy Burr. It’s a delightful course and my 29th course in my quest to play every course in Massachusetts.
Sandy Burr course begins with two par 5s and only one par 4 in the opening 5 holes (but par can mean nothing on holes 1-5, too). Holes 6-8are quirky, working through some marshland and giving a bit of a target golf vibe.
The back 9 is more straight forward, the greens are sloped and slanted nicely (many were punched, sadly) and all your shots are right in front of you. The 12th has two green options, which I think is cool. The par 3 13th will be great when the new tee box is built and 14, 15, 16 are solid short par 4s where you can bang driver or hang back. 18 is a very strong closer.
The golden age architecture is all there. Cool bunkering, simple routing, small greens. I got some Taconic vibes, where you feel like you’re playing down in a little valley and climb out a few times during the round. You can see a lot of holes fro various spots, especially with the leaves down.
If you enjoy playable, walkable, interesting courses, Sandy Burr should not be missed.
