Round 36: Cape Cod CC
My first 2021 round in MA came Cape Cod Country Club. It’s number 37 in my quest to play every course in the state. What a way to start the new year.
As you drive to the clubhouse, the road cuts through the course and you get a preview of a lot of the elevation changes. The incredible volcano green on the fourteenth hole will catch your eye, just make sure you keep your hands on the wheel at 10 and 2.
While I didn’t get to see the course on full display because of temporary tees, the greens are really superb. I’m glad they weren’t mid-summer speed because they might have exposed my early season form. It’s a course where local knowledge is worth quite a bit. The false fronts and run offs make choosing the right iron a priority. Even though it’s a 6100 yard par 71, there is challenge on nearly every hole.
Another highlight is the bunkering, some are long and serpentine, others are shaped like horseshoes, and some might swallow you and your scorecard right up. I played with some seasoned CCCC guys, and they also pointed out some “ghost bunkers” that have been neglected but were still haunting the edges of the course particularly on the sixth hole.
If you haven’t played CCCC, put it on your list, like now. Not only is it a delightful course where you’ll hit every club in your bag, but there’s a chance it might not be around for much longer as it’s possibly going to be turned into a solar field.
If you believe in public golf, make a point to fill their parking lot every day so it’s clear to the owners that excellent, affordable public golf is worthy of preserving.
